Download and install

It takes about two minutes. Windows will probably warn you once. Here is what to expect.

1. Download the installer

Click the green button. Your browser saves a file called PCRescueKit-Installer.exe, usually in your Downloads folder.

2. Get past the browser warning

Edge or Chrome may say Microsoft doesn't trust this download. That is not a virus warning.

Microsoft trusts files that millions of people have already downloaded. Not many people have downloaded this one yet. Every new program starts here. The warning goes away as more people install it.

Edge: click the three dots next to the download, then Keep. Edge asks again. Click Show more, then Keep anyway. You need both steps. The first one alone does nothing.
Chrome: click Keep on the download bar.

3. Check the signature

This step is optional, and worth doing. Right click the file, choose Properties, then the Digital Signatures tab. It should say PCRescue Labs LLC.

If it says anything else, or there is no Digital Signatures tab, don't run it. Delete it and email me.

4. Run it

Double click the file. Windows may show a blue box that says Windows protected your PC. Click More info, then Run anyway.

Windows then asks if you want to allow the app to make changes. Click Yes. The Kit runs real repair tools, and those need permission.

5. Press Diagnose

The Kit opens to a plain summary of your computer. Press Diagnose. It checks the machine and tells you what it found, in plain English, with the fix next to each problem.

One rule before you fix anything. If the drive health check shows a warning, stop. Back up your files first. A drive that reports problems can fail at any time, and no software can fix a failing drive.
